Labels: ApexSQL Log ...ApexSQL Major Upgrades - FAQ We've released a lot of Major Upgrades lately (which is a good thing) but there will be questions and issues related to this that I wanted to go over. How do I verify if I’m under Maintenance and eligible for FREE upgrades? • Contact sales@apexsql.com and include company information. • Visit our Upgrade center and verify the Maintenance status of any activation key What if I'm not under Maintenance? Can I still upgrade? If you aren’t under maintenance you can still purchase upgrades with a 30% existing customer discount. Contact sales@apexsql.com for a quote. What if I don't want to Upgrade? If you don’t want to upgrade, please turn off the auto-updater which will continue to prompt you to upgrade to new versions. You can always turn it back on at a later date. Here's a KB article on how to turn the auto-updater OFF. If you have already upgraded, revert to the version you are entitled to. How do I revert to old version? You can simply uninstall the new version and download and install the old version. Click here for a KB on how to downgrade to an older version. I purchased software when ApexSQL still offered "Free Upgrades" - am I grandfathered? Yes - your key should work on all new versions. If it doesn't pls contact sales@apexsql.com The auto-updater told me to update and now my key doesn't work! Older versions of the software don't contain our latest and greatest auto-updater (see below) which gives an explicit warning on whether a version is a MAJOR (not free) upgrade or not. In other situations people are seeing the warning during the prompt for auto-update but not realizing that MAJOR new versions aren't free. In such cases you would need to purchase the Upgrade or Downgrade. We apologize for the inconvenience although in the latter case I'm not sure how to make this more explicit - we'll have to think on this a bit if it keeps happening. I wrote an article further explaining this here.  I purchased the software 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year etc prior to the release - don't I get a free upgrade? We've worked hard to explain what purchasing Maintenance is important including posting articles on our purchase page, shop cart and even including reminders post sales. But some people still make the decision to not purchase Maintenance. In such cases we offer a 30% discount off the new version for being an existing customer. Please contact sales@apexsql.com if you are interested in upgrading. We hope people understand that software development is an expensive business and Maintenance contracts allow us to continue to improve our technology and deliver major value to our customers. This change was made for a few reasons but the biggest was the product has grown so large and that the modules are so different it will be easier to plan development and release of the two modules separately. The two products are ApexSQL Log 2008 (Data auditing) and ApexSQL Recover 2008(disaster recovery). Each tool is specifically streamlined for its respective use. This will make it more cost-effective for customers to purchase only the tool that they really need (although both tools can be purchased with cross selling discounts or in ApexSQL DBA Studio). The split also allows us to improve the recovery and auditing components separately. This makes the development process more efficient; we'd be able to release their 2009 versions (which we have already spec'd out) on a more granular schedule. If you own ApexSQL Log and are under Maintenance, we will provide you with a free key of ApexSQL Recover on the same maintenance schedule. In the future, you can upgrade to just one or both versions. In our industry, every couple of years one gets to hear about a new product type or even category of products. We as industry are continuously innovating, creating new products or new major and minor features. However once a product category is established the products in it tend to be implemented similarly to others products and there is very little general innovation of the bases of the category itself. Very rarely does it happen that a product still fits into the category but changes everything that was implicitly assumed on how products in the category work. So when I saw how HyperBac works I was blown away - this is the clearest case of thinking out-of-the-box that I have seen in years (more so if you exchange "box" for "SQL Server".) HyperBac is a product (and a company) in SQL Server backup compression/encryption category. All others product (that I know of) in this category work through extended procedures and SQL Server backup interfaces. But guys at HyperBac decided to skip all that and made a product that is completely orthogonal to SQL Server: HyperBac works on OS level and can thus compress not only your backups but also trace and bulk files (for example) and works pretty much with any other mainstream DBMS out there. This, to me, is game changing. As a consequence of its architecture there is another very attractive feature for 3rd party developers: you can leverage HyperBac to read their compressed backups without any change in your code by simply adding a configuration option in HyperBac. Jeffrey Aven from HyperBac was kind enough to describe this procedure for ApexSQL Log in his post Using ApexSQLLog with HyperBac. In the post Jeffrey described everything from the configuring to demonstrating that ApexSQL Log and HyperBac afterwards "just work" without any further effort on anyone's part. This ease of use and integration will become even more important to our customers with support for data recovery from database backups and use of database backups in auditing in the upcoming ApexSQL Log 2008.
