ApexSQL News Product announcements, promotions, discussions, and other ApexSQL Tools news Important Changes to ApexSQL products We are happy to announce that ApexSQL Code and ApexSQL Report are now FREE products. You can now take advantage of each of these products' features without purchasing an activation key. We also have fully integrated the ApexSQL Source Control add-in features to ApexSQL Edit, ApexSQL Diff, and ApexSQL Script. With this integration, you no longer need to activate the add-in separately to use the additional source control features it provides--these features have been completely absorbed by all applicable apps. Is the ApexSQL Source Control add-in totally gone? I still see it marked as "coming soon" on your website. ApexSQL Source Control add-in will be eventually released as an SSMS add-in like ApexSQL Refactor and ApexSQL Debug. Change in Evaluation Period Starting November 25, 2009, the evaluation period for ApexSQL products has been changed to 14 days. This change is now implemented in ApexSQL Diff, ApexSQL Script, and ApexSQL Data Diff. This change will eventually be applied to all products except ApexSQL Edit. ApexSQL Edit's evaluation period has been extended to 90 days. What follows is a little insight into what you can find in the newest version of Apex SQL Report. I was young when we started working on Apex SQL Report 6.0 – what the hell took so long? Well, 6.0 is written in this fancy new language called C#, has documentation, an installer, a new interface and some other exciting things that people tend to like with their software. It was much like launching a brand new product, and if you compare it to the previous versions you'll see why. The new UI looks killer – the tabs are a great addition. Any other UI highlights? The tabbed interface definitely looks great, even if Brian was horrified by it initially. The UI has been simplified and given a better flow. The tabbed interface and the new report creation paradigm have really helped make navigation much easier. Is the new version any faster?Actually, yes! Reports run much faster and thanks to server side caching result sets of 1000 come back as quickly as sets of 10. To increase speed and reduce web traffic we only send data on an as needed basis. We now offer the ability to download and evaluate this app right? I think we made it before the 1,000th request for this … but just barely. Do you think users will appreciate the ability to demo a web app? I think users will definitely like this feature. Now they can see just how Apex SQL Report will work no their servers with their data. Of course we've kept the online demo as well for users without web servers that want to give the program a quick test run. What is the new paradigm for report creation? We've introduced a wizard for creating and editing reports. This helps walk users through the steps involved in report creation. Users don't need to follow the whole wizard. Reports are ready with default settings after the first page of the wizard is completed. We plan a new release shortly after this – can u describe main features? This is where the fun begins. I'm getting started on the specs now, but the next version will have an all new grid for tabular reports, all new graphs for graphical reports, the ability to export to PDF, column level filtering, column grouping, and a number of other great features. I'm going to be pushing for additional drilldown levels, something users have been asking for, and a few other pet features I'd like to see introduced. How much does the upgrade cost for this version? Migrating from Apex SQL Report 5.3 to 6.0 is free for all existing customers. How is the software installed? The program is installed like any other application. An installation program is run which sets up the virtual directory in IIS and installs the necessary information on the database you wish to generate reports from. Once this is run users can immediately navigate to the URL and begin creating and viewing reports. What are some different graph types supported? There are over 10 types of graphs available. Among them are pie charts, bar graphs, pipe charts, donut graphs, area graphs and multi-series graphs. You should be able to find a graph to fit any report you need. I need to thank Kumaran, the lead developer, for all the hard work he put into this, as well as all the other people that worked hard to make Apex SQL Report 6.0 a reality. Thanks for reading and make sure you keep an eye out for future releases of Apex SQL Report.
