Charlie team update: ApexSQL Refactor

What have you been working on?

Charlie team continues in cycle of improving our free add-ins for SQL Server Management Studio and Microsoft Visual Studio. Our focus is currently on ApexSQL Refactor 2014 R7, more precisely, on SQL code formatting.

What is the ETA to production?

The latest release of ApexSQL Refactor is planned for September but in the meantime, we will release an interim on 7/31/2015.

What is included in new release?

ApexSQL Refactor 2014 R7 version will be without any remaining known bugs. This interim release will address most of bugs reported by users, especially those with formatting BEGIN END blocks (indentation of both, BEGIN END block and content of BEGIN END block). We have currently resolved about 30 bugs for interim release and we are planning to resolve 30 more for the release in September. We are also redesigning some of the formatting options which will result in increased level of SQL code formatting customization. Some of them are:

Wrap lines longer that x characters option will also be improved in a way that new lines will optimize indentation. SQL context will be added,

This feature is still in early stage of design process.

What is planned in future releases and what are ETAs?

We are planning two more releases of ApexSQL Complete by the end of the year with some major quality and usability increase.

The first release is planned for October and it will address majority of remaining bugs and problems. We will also implementation of support for Visual Studio 2015 for all of our add-ins, from which ApexSQL Complete will be first.

Second release is planned for December and it will be our last release for this year. We will improve existing features in this release and also implement full support for all SQL Azure Database V12 features. The most important features that will be upgraded are: Snippets, Database schema caching, and Tab navigation.

As for the support of Microsoft SQL Server, it’s planned to be added in ApexSQL Complete in December 2015, as for the ApexSQL Refactor and ApexSQL Search ETA is Q1 2016.
