ApexSQL Edit, a standalone SQL Integrated development environment, has been discontinued in favor of ApexSQL add-ins for SQL Server Management Studio and Visual Studio. What this article will provide is a feature-wise mapping of ApexSQL Edit that has been incorporated via ApexSQL add-ins. Comparing to the latest version of ApexSQL Edit, our existing add-ins have updated engines, improved quality, and in many cases additional features. They are all under active development. Let’s quickly overview what these add-ins can do
- ApexSQL Source Control is a SQL Server Management Studio and Visual Studio add-in derived directly from the ApexSQL Edit’s Source control integration feature. They share the same functionality, but unlike ApexSQL Edit, ApexSQL Source Control fully supports SQL Server 2012 objects and has significantly improved performance (up to 300% faster in some cases). For a direct comparison between ApexSQL Edit and ApexSQL Source Control, please see this article: ApexSQL Edit version control vs. SQL Server database version control add-in
- ApexSQL Search is a free SQL Server Management Studio and Visual Studio add-in, which searches for text in SQL database objects and data in SQL database tables and views. It allows changing tables, views, stored procedures, functions, columns, parameter names and schema without breaking dependencies, while visualizing all objects’ interdependencies. For a direct comparison between ApexSQL Edit and ApexSQL Search, please check these two articles: ApexSQL Edit vs. Add-ins – SQL object and text search and ApexSQL Edit vs. Add-ins – Visual dependencies
- ApexSQL Complete inherited ApexSQL Edit’s capabilities for code auto-completion. This is a free SQL Server Management Studio and Visual Studio add-in designed to speed up coding. It completes SQL statements automatically, fills in SQL fragments, highlights syntax errors, generates outlines for the SQL script structure and speeds up coding with snippets. To directly compare ApexSQL Edit with ApexSQL Complete, please see this article: ApexSQL Edit vs. ApexSQL Complete
- ApexSQL Profile is implemented as an add-in to Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. It was previously included in ApexSQL Edit as a standard feature. ApexSQL Profile allows profiling of the stored procedures, as well as “Lazy profiling”. To directly compare ApexSQL Edit with ApexSQL Profile, please check this article: ApexSQL Edit SQL performance profiling vs. ApexSQL Profile
- ApexSQL Refactor is a free SQL Server Management Studio and Visual Studio add-in derived from the ApexSQL Edit’s refactoring feature but further optimized and improved by offering full SQL Server 2012 support (e.g. FileTable refactoring is now fully supported). For a direct comparison between ApexSQL Edit and ApexSQL Refactor, please see this article: ApexSQL Edit refactoring feature vs. SQL refactoring add-in
Regarding the rest of ApexSQL Edit’s features, we are working with our community in defining other features that should be preserved and added to our SQL Server Management Studio and Visual Studio Add-ins.
